Still, Life goes on
Still, Life goes on invites viewers to step back from the intensity of the present moment and recognize
that no emotion, no circumstance, is ever final. Everything passes. The wheel keeps turning.
At the center of the piece is a mechanical spinning wheel that usually rotates in a steady rhythm. When a
viewer is detected, the wheel’s speed and direction shift unpredictably, only to gradually return to its
original motion. This subtle transformation reflects how life reacts to outside forces but ultimately finds
its way back to balance.
Mounted above the wheel is a robotic moth that moves with quiet regularity, as if animated by its own
internal drive. Its presence suggests vulnerability and persistence, mirroring the cycles of change below.
This work is deeply personal. One of my earliest memories is of my great-grandmother raising silkworms.
I studied textiles in Korea and silk has remained a central material in my practice. The cocoon, the wheel,
the transformation—these elements are part of my own lineage. In Still, Life Goes On, I connect that
memory with contemporary new media art, using sensors, motors, 3D printing, and real-time interaction to
create a work that is both intimate and dynamic.
The work exists in the space between tradition and technology, between personal memory and shared
experience. It speaks to the soft persistence of life—that even in moments of disruption, we continue to
move forward, quietly, steadily, becoming.
Still, Life Goes On은 현재의 강렬한 감정과 순간에서 한 발 물러나,
어떤 감정도 어떤 상황도 결코 영원하지 않다는 사실을 인식하도록 관객을 초대한다.
모든 것은 지나가고, 바퀴는 계속해서 회전한다.
작품의 중심에는 일정한 리듬으로 회전하는 기계식 물레가 놓여 있다.
관객의 존재가 감지되면 물레의 속도와 방향은 예측할 수 없이 변화하지만,
곧 다시 본래의 움직임으로 돌아온다.
이러한 미묘한 변화는 외부의 영향에 반응하면서도 결국 균형을 찾아가는 삶의 흐름을 반영한다.
물레 위에는 조용한 규칙성을 지닌 로봇 나방이 설치되어 있으며,
마치 스스로의 내적 동력에 의해 움직이는 존재처럼 보인다.
이 나방의 존재는 아래에서 반복되는 변화의 순환과 맞물리며,
취약함과 지속성이라는 상반된 감각을 동시에 떠올리게 한다.
이 작업은 나에게 매우 개인적인 기억에서 출발한다.
어린 시절, 증조할머니가 누에를 기르던 장면은 나의 가장 오래된 기억 중 하나다.
한국에서 섬유를 전공한 이후, 실크는 나의 작업에서 지속적으로 중요한 재료로 남아 있다.
고치와 물레, 그리고 변형의 과정은 나 자신의 계보와 깊이 연결되어 있다.
Still, Life Goes On에서 나는 이러한 기억을 센서와 모터,
3D 프린팅과 실시간 인터랙션을 활용한 현대의 뉴미디어 아트와 연결하며,
개인적이면서도 역동적인 하나의 작업으로 풀어낸다.
이 작품은 전통과 기술, 개인의 기억과 공유된 경험 사이의 공간에 존재한다.
그것은 혼란과 흔들림의 순간 속에서도 조용하고 꾸준하게 앞으로 나아가는 삶의 지속성을 이야기하며,
계속해서 변화하는 과정 그 자체를 응시하도록 만든다.
